If you tune into Christian television, scroll through religious social media, or step inside certain sanctuaries today, you won’t have to wait long to hear a sales pitch. “Send a seed gift of $50 for your breakthrough.” “Order this anointed prayer cloth to unlock your blessing.” “Pay for this exclusive spiritual masterclass.”
Religion and spirituality have become a multi-billion-dollar business. Many religious and spiritual leaders across the globe have turned the pulpit into a storefront, putting price tags on prayer, prophecy, and the preaching of Yahweh’s Word, the Bible!
It makes my heart ache as a church elder, because Yahshua the Messiah couldn’t have been clearer about how His ministers ought to handle the Gospel. When Yahshua sent out His disciples, He gave them a direct, unyielding command in Matthew 10:8:
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”
Notice the standard Yahshua sets. He doesn’t say, “Charge a reasonable fee for your ministry.” He doesn’t say, “Build a subscription model for the anointed.” He says: Freely give.
The Grace We Received Cost Us Nothing
To understand why we must give freely, we have to look back at how we received.
Did you pay Almighty Yahweh for your salvation? Did you buy your forgiveness with a credit card? Did you earn the Holy Spirit through a financial transaction?
Absolutely not! Yahweh poured out His mercy, grace, and redemption without charging us a single cent. It cost Yahshua His life on the stake, but to us, it was a pure, unearned gift.
Because we received the priceless grace of Yahweh for free, we have zero right to turn around and monetize it for others. The moment a preacher puts a transaction between a seeking soul and the truth of Yahweh, they undermine the very nature of grace. Grace is unearned; therefore, ministry must be unpaid by those receiving it.
Expecting Nothing in Return
“Freely giving” means exactly that—giving without strings attached. It means preaching the Word, praying for the sick, laying hands on the broken, and pastoring Yahweh’s people expecting nothing in return from them.
It means no hidden fees, no required “donations” to receive spiritual counsel, and no withholding Yahweh’s truth until someone hands over their wallet.
Now, let’s be clear: Scripture supports the local church and teaches that faithful laborers are worthy of their financial support so they can serve full-time (1 Timothy 5:17-18). But there is a massive line between a church family supporting their shepherd and a preacher peddling the Word of Yahweh for personal gain, luxury, and profit.
Paul understood this distinction deeply. He wrote to the church in Corinth:
“Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of Yahweh for profit. On the contrary, in Yahshua we speak before Yahweh with sincerity, as those sent from Elohim.” (2 Corinthians 2:17)
If someone is charging you money to unlock a spiritual gift, grant you access to Yahweh, or deliver a “prophetic word,” walk away. Yahweh’s grace is not a commodity, and His ministers are not salespeople.
Restoring Integrity to the Pulpit
The world is watching us. When non-believers look at the church and see leaders demanding money for spiritual favors, they don’t see the love of Yahshua—they see a scam. It drives people away from the stake and dishonors the Master we claim to serve.
It’s time for leaders to step up and reclaim the integrity of the Gospel.
We preach because people are hurting. We share the Bible because it brings life. We pray because Yahweh hears us. We serve because Yahshua served us first. We do it all freely, open-handedly, with no demands, no minimum donations, and no ulterior motives.
The Gospel was free when Yahshua paid for it at Calvary, it is free today, and it will be free forever. Let’s make sure our pulpits reflect the open hands of our Master and Savior, Yahshua! Yes, freely received, freely give.
