Who is Satan? Truths About the Devil’s Plans

Bring up the name “Satan” or “the Devil” in conversation today, and you will get completely different reactions. Some people immediately picture a cartoon villain in a red suit holding a pitchfork. Others think of Hollywood horror movies or dismiss him entirely as a harmless metaphor for our worst human impulses.

Yet, when you flip through the pages of the Bible, the portrait is vastly different—it is sober, grounded, and incredibly serious. Scripture never treats the devil as a myth or a joke. Instead, it unmasks him as a highly strategic, deeply hostile enemy who actively shapes the world around us.

To truly understand who we are up against, we need to look past the cultural myths and look at his actual identity, character, and daily playbook. By digging into three foundational verses—John 8:44, 1 Peter 5:8, and Revelation 12:9—we can pull back the curtain and see exactly how this adversary operates.

1. The Core Character: A Murderer and the Father of Lies

To understand a person’s tactics, you first have to understand their nature. Yahshua didn’t mince words when describing the devil. In John 8:44, He laid out a chilling psychological profile:

“He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Yahshua Messiah reveals that Satan’s native language is deception. He doesn’t just tell lies; he originates them. He is the “father” of them.

Notice the direct link Yahshua makes between lying and murder. Satan’s ultimate goal is destruction—the spiritual and literal death of human beings. But because he doesn’t have the power to just destroy you outright, he uses deception as his primary weapon. If he can get you to believe a lie about yourself, about sin, or about Almighty Yahweh, that lie will eventually do the destructive work for him.

2. The Title: The God of This World

This deception isn’t just happening on an individual level; it operates on a massive, global scale. In Revelation 12:9, we get a glimpse of his sweeping influence:

“The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.”

Other parts of Scripture reinforce this by calling him “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4). This doesn’t mean Satan is equal to Yahweh Almighty. His power is on a leash, and his time is limited. However, it does mean that he currently influences the prevailing mindsets, cultures, and systems of our world.

Think about how a culture slowly shifts to call evil good and good evil. That isn’t accidental. Satan works behind the scenes as a universal deceiver, quietly steering media, trends, and philosophies to lead the world astray. He constructs a matrix of distractions and false truths designed to keep people blinded to the reality of Yahweh.

3. The Tactics: The Prowling Predator

Satan isn’t a distant, hands-off CEO of evil. He is a hands-on predator. The Apostle Peter gives us a vivid word picture of his daily operational strategy in 1 Peter 5:8:

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

A lion doesn’t attack a herd randomly. It watches. It tracks. It waits for the weak, the isolated, the distracted, or the prideful animal to wander away from the safety of the group.

Satan operates the exact same way. He prowls. He studies your vulnerabilities—whether that’s loneliness, anger, financial stress, or insecurity—and he waits for the opportune time to strike. His roar isn’t necessarily a loud noise; it’s the voice of fear, anxiety, condemnation, or overwhelming temptation designed to paralyze you and separate you from Yahweh and community.

The Battle Strategy: Weapon vs. Outcome

When you piece these scriptures together, a clear picture emerges. Satan is a defeated but still dangerous adversary. He rules the systems of this current world, his character is defined by absolute falsehood, and his tactic is to stalk human beings like prey, waiting to devour them through deception.

But here is the good news: the Bible never exposes the devil’s tactics just to scare us. It exposes them so we can fight back. Peter tells us to be “alert and of sober mind.” Paul tells us to stand firm. James promises that if we submit to Yahweh and resist the devil, he will flee.

The enemy’s greatest weapon is the dark. Once you turn on the light of Scripture and see his schemes for what they are, his power over your life begins to shatter.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when reading about the devil’s schemes. In fact, Scripture lays out a beautiful, direct correlation between our daily spiritual actions and the ultimate defeat of the enemy.

Think of it as your spiritual playbook. When you choose to obey Yahweh’s commands in the present, you are actively aligning yourself with the absolute, guaranteed victory of the future.

Here is how your daily “weapons” match up against his ultimate “outcome”:

Your Action: Submission

Daily surrendering your will, your plans, and your heart to Yahweh’s authority.

  • The Scripture: James 4:7 — “Submit yourselves, then, to Yahweh. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
  • His Ultimate Fate: Disarmed
Satan is stripped of his legal authority and right to condemn you. Messiah Yahshua has already paid your debt.
  • The Scripture: Colossians 2:15 — “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the stake.”

Your Action: Spiritual Armor

Actively wrapping yourself in Yahweh’s truth, walking in righteousness, guarding your heart with faith, and using the Word of Yahweh as your defense.

  • The Scripture: Ephesians 6:11 — “Put on the full armor of Yahweh, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
  • His Ultimate Fate: Crushed
He will be completely and utterly subdued under the feet of the Church. His ability to terrorize believers has a fast-approaching expiration date.
  • The Scripture: Romans 16:20 — “The Elohim of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”

Your Action: Vigilance

Staying self-controlled, alert, sober-minded, and refusing to let your guard down or compromise with worldly ideas.

  • The Scripture: 1 Peter 5:9 — “Resist him, standing firm in the faith…”
  • His Ultimate Fate: Eternal Fire
He faces absolute, permanent judgment. He will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, completely removed from Yahweh’s creation forever.
  • The Scripture: Revelation 20:10 — “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur…”

The Bottom Line

Every single time you choose to submit, suit up in spiritual armor, and stay vigilant, you are enforcing a victory that Yahshua the Messiah already won on the stake. Don’t be blind, don’t be afraid! Satan is fighting a losing war, and his end is already written.
